Question

Children Cause of Diarrhoea My one-year-old son has been taking brand A of formula milk since he was 9 months old. Recently he had this diarrhoea episode and whenever he takes too much milk, he will have an upset stomach. Plus, he has flatulence and it smells really bad. I have been diluting his milk ever since to prevent him from having a repeat of these unwanted symptoms.

He has never had this problem before. Is this an indicator that the formula / milk is no longer suitable for him? Should I change to another formula? Apart from taking milk, he's also eating porridge rice cooked with some veggies, anchovies or meat (chicken/fish).

Thanks.

Answer

Answered by Dr Hon Was he put on Hypoantigenic (HA) milk before 9 months as well? Was he put on HA milk for the prevention of allergies?

He might have had an episode of gastroenteritis causing acquired lactose intolerance. It would be best if you can change his milk to a soy-based formula for 2-4 weeks after which you can try the HA formula again or the normal cow's milk formula depending on why he was put on HA formula initially.

Giving probiotics daily for 1 month will also help.

Do not give him too much fruits as he might have concurrent fructose intolerance.
